Review

Another in the ‘Assembly’ series from Caesar, and again we find ourselves looking at a World War II German subject. This time it is the German infantry on the Eastern front as they continued to fall back in the face of the resurgent Red Army. The contents of the set are very nearly the same as the other sets, in that they share the weapons and faces sprues found in those sets, and just the main body component sprue is different. The quality of production of all these pieces is exactly the same as the rest, so reference to our review of the first in this series, German Infantry 1943, applies here too.

The figures in this set still wear the long boots that they had done throughout the war, but instead of the tunic all here wear the smock, which has no visible hood and looks like the 1942 pattern although could also pass for others. The sprue has no special accessories – just the bodies, arms, legs etc. to build up to 16 figures. As with the other sets we were surprised at how limiting the actual arms and legs were – it seems no matter what you supply, someone will want something else, even when there is a freedom of choice such a set provides.

While we were disappointed that the range of limbs was not wider this sort of set is certainly your best shot if you have a specific pose in mind, and if nothing else is a very handy source of spare parts for conversions of other figures. To us the figures just don’t look as realistic as ones that are purpose-made, and with a dozen or more parts required to make up a well-equipped soldier this is not a speedy way to gain a lot of troops.

Hopefully the images of the sprue and our attempt at a typical pose will tell you all you need to know about what is on offer, and what is possible with this set. If you like the concept then you will probably like the set, because it is historically accurate and well produced, and the parts fit pretty well although of course will need gluing (which is easy with the hard plastic used).
