The new aircraft was classified as an anti-submarine aircraft for work in a pair according to the "hunter-killer" scheme. The first prototype flew on December 19, 1945. Two versions of the Guardian were produced: the AF-2S for torpedo and bomb attacks (the "killer" with a crew of three) and the AF-2W with a large under-fuselage radar (the "hunter"). The Guardian was the largest single-engine piston aircraft ever used by the Navy. The last of the 389 Guardians built was delivered to the NAVY in March 1953. In early 1953, the Guardians began to be replaced by new S2F-1 Tracker aircraft and in 1955 the history of the Guardian in combat units ended. The aircraft began to be gradually transferred to reserve units. Some Guardians ended up in civilian hands and after conversion continued to serve as "firefighters".
