Volkswagen Iltis ( Iltis from German - " ferret " ). or Volkswagen Typ 183 was the main SUV in the Bundeswehr until the appearance of the Mercedes Wolf ( Mercedes-Benz G-Class ). This SUV became the successor to the DKW Munga model and is ideologically similar to such Kϋbelwagen as the legendary Volkswagen Tour 82 and its post-war replica VW 181. The goals before production were formed by the customer in a military way clearly: speed of at least 100 km/h, load capacity of at least 500 kg , the ability to overcome slopes at an angle of at least 60° and water obstacles with a depth of at least half a meter. In addition, the car was as close as possible to civilian ones, that is, components and assemblies could be easily replaced. All this made the Iltis a simple and reliable military SUV. Back in 1980, when Dakar was still a matter of single enthusiasts, Swede Freddie Kottulinski became the winner in a VW Iltis jeep. In 1983, the Canadian company Bombardier bought a license to produce the Iltis from Volkswagen and began producing it for the Canadian military. A total of 16 thousand copies were produced. At the moment, the car is in service with the armies of Estonia , Canada , Belgium and, partly, Germany. In the German army since 1988, it has also been replaced by the more expensive Mercedes Wolf Mercedes-Benz G-Klasse.
