L`Aigle was built as a yacht for the Emperor Napoleon III in Cherbourg, designed by Dupuis de Loma. Launched on December 23, 1858, commissioned in 1859. In September 1860 and 1865, Napoleon III aboard l`Aigle traveled to Algeria. In October 1869, l`Aigle went with Empress Eugenia on board to Egypt to open the Suez Canal. In 1870, it was converted into a gunboat, renamed Le Rapide in 1873. It was withdrawn to the reserve and then disarmed between 1885 and 1888.
