The armed steamer (sloop-of-war) Saginaw was built on Mar Island in San Francisco Bay in 1858-1860. He served in the Pacific Ocean: off the Chinese coast (until July 1862), off the coast of the United States and Mexico (1863-1865), in the Pacific Northwest (Washington state and southern Alaska - 1866-1869). The voyage to the Midway and Kure atolls ended with the sinking of a ship on the reefs on October 29, 1870. The Saginaw wreck was discovered in 2003.
