«Solferino» - the battery French battleship type «Magenta» was launched on June 24, 1861. «Solferino» and «Magenta» were the only ones in the world with the battery ironclads dvuhdechnym (double-decker) located guns, which increased the number of guns without having to increase the length of the ship and increase the range of defeats the purpose. Armadillos in this series have been equipped with a battering ram made of wrought iron that can effectively penetrate the underwater part of the enemy. The ship's hull was made from wood and trimmed with wrought iron armor.

During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, both ships were on standby. 31 October 1875 «Magenta», stood in the harbor of Toulon, was burned. «Solferino» was scrapped in 1882.
