At the beginning of 1942, the need to create an anti-tank aircraft that could destroy the armor of Soviet medium and heavy tanks became obvious to the Luftwaffe command. In the summer of 1942, it was decided to convert a small batch of Ju 88A-4 bombers into anti-tank variants; they were subsequently designated Ju 88P-1. The large ventral nacelle of these aircraft contained a 75 mm PaK 40L (also known as BK 7.5) anti-tank gun with an electro-pneumatic charging system; the nacelle could be dropped in an extreme situation using pyrotechnic devices. The engines of the attack aircraft were protected by armor. At first, the nose of the aircraft remained glassed, like a conventional Ju 88A-4 bomber, but test results showed that the glass did not withstand the effects of gases when fired. Therefore, later on the Ju 88P-1 was equipped with a nose section without glass (from the Ju 88C fighter), and the muzzle brake was also changed. By September 1943, 18 copies of this aircraft were produced, some of them ended up on the Eastern Front as part of the "Versuchskommando für Panzerbekämpfung". Subsequently, six Ju 88P-1s were transferred to the 1st Bomber Squadron "Hindenburg". (Kampfgeschwader 1 "Hindenburg").
