Cruiser "Pallas", "Diana" and "Aurora", named after the ancient Greek goddesses, inherited its name from the sailing frigates, distinguished themselves in the development and protection of the Far Eastern borders of the Russian Empire in the first half of the 19th century. Designed as "fighters trade", being reduced by half (by tonnage and armament) version of the armored cruisers series "Rurik". In March 1895 he began the development of protected cruisers of the project for the Pacific and it was decided to build three of the same type of the cruiser at the St. Petersburg shipyard.
