"Santisima-Trinidad" (Spanish Nuestra Senora de la Santisima Trinidad - "Holy Trinity") - the Spanish three-deck battleship of the 1st class, designed by the Irish Matthew Mullan in Havana and launched in 1769. The hull and deck are entirely made of Cuban mahogany, and the masts and yards are made of Mexican pine. The thickness of the outer skin of the sides reached 60 cm.After being equipped with 140 guns (of which thirty-32 pounds on the lower deck), the 63-meter ship with a displacement of 4902 tons was the largest sailing warship of its time.
During the American War of Independence, Santisima-Trinidad was sent to intimidate the English in the English Channel. For its low maneuverability, he was nicknamed the âHeavyweightâ (Spanish: El Ponderoso).
In 1795, it was converted into the first four-day ship in the world with an increase in the number of guns to 140. Despite these measures, two years later he almost got captured in the battle of St. Vincent. During the Battle of Trafalgar, a gigantic floppy ship with a crew of 1,200, which 7 English battleships fought simultaneously, remained afloat, despite significant damage. After the battle, they tried to tow him to England for repairs, but a strong storm began and the "Holy Trinity" sank.
