The Norwegian merchant brigantine Leon was built in 1880 in the city of Larvik, and Porsgrund was her home port. The main area of activity was trade in goods between the British Isles and Norway. Later the ship was converted into a schooner. Leon was a typical North Sea and Baltic merchant sailing ship of the second half of the 19th century. It transported cargo until 1915. On 30 October, while sailing from Granton to Porsgrunn, while fully loaded with coal, Leon was damaged. The crew was unable to control the damage and were forced to abandon the ship before it sank.
