The three-masted whaling ship was built of white oak in 1799. She was 87 feet (26.5 m) long and displaced 239 tons. Team – 20 people. On November 20, 1820, 2,000 miles (3,200 km) off the west coast of South America, during another whale hunt, a huge male sperm whale, approximately 85 feet long, was spotted near a ship, attacking the ship and ramming it. The ship sank. Only eight sailors survived from the crew. In 1821, First Mate Owen Chase wrote Narratives of the Strange and Sad Lost of the Whaling Ship Essex, which inspired Herman Melville to write Moby Dick, published in 1851.
