There were 11 ships in the series. The first three gunboats, including Wespe, were launched in 1876. All of them replaced the monitors. The task assigned to these ships was to be in the North Sea and to defend the mouths of the Weser and Elbe rivers and the entrance to the Jade River. Therefore, when designing the boats, it was tried, by all means, to give them as little draught as possible. The gunboats of this type had a serious defensive power. Their value increased even more due to their shallow draught, when they could hit the enemy with their heavy artillery from a long distance by moving into shallow waters in the mouths of German rivers.
