Douglas DB-7 (factory) was known by many names, as Douglas Boston light bomber and night fighter Douglas Havoc in the countries of the British Commonwealth of Nations, and as a tactical bomber A-20 Havoc or night fighter P-70 in the United States. In the Soviet Union operated under the name A-20 or Boston.JesieniÄ… the same year the American army air corps published specification bomber. The team that built the company Douglas decided to modify the draft Model 7A through exchange engines more powerful Pratt & Whitney R-1830 S3C3-G Twin Wasp with 1100 hp (820 kW), changing the designation of the project on the Model 7B. Proposes the use of two alternative parts of the bow, one transparent for the bombardier and the other face-down, equipped with a battery of six machine guns and two 7.7 mm 12,7 mm. For the transparent part of the bow you could mount two gondolas on both sides of the hull, including two machine guns. Others had an armament caliber machine guns mounted in a 7.7 mm retractable turret arms or fire through the open bomb bay doors. Bomb load was increased to 900 kg.

Competitors structures were Douglas airplanes North American NA-40, Stearman X-100 and the Martin 167F. Although the Model 7B was sufficiently fast and maneuverable, it aroused interest in the American army, but got credit for the French Commission for purchasing, visiting the United States. The French side participated in the testing machine Douglas and eventually ordered 100 machines, increasing the order to 270 at the start of the war.
