The battleship of the British fleet HMS Captain at the time of commissioning in 1870 was one of the most powerful high-speed ships of this class in the world. The ship was designed and built under the leadership of the famous ship builder Cooper Phipps Kolza by the firm "Lairds" in Birkenhead. Launched on March 27, 1869. On April 30, 1870, the battleship officially entered service as part of the English Channel squadron.

The overall appearance of the battleship was very peculiar. Lowering the overall height of the board, Coles decided to give the battleship the maximum possible sailing armament, which should be combined with the presence of two gun turrets. However, for the artillery in the towers, large angles of fire were required, which could be greatly hampered by masts and rigging, so the designers left the situation, placing a narrow 26-foot (7.9 m) wide deck on top of the towers, a bridge from the nose to stern. Thus, the upper deck, on which the towers were located, remained minimally cluttered, and all work with rigging was carried out on a hinged deck, sometimes called a "hurricane deck". This decision led to a greater increase in the center of gravity of the ship. The total overload was 731 tons, and the bulk of this extra burden fell on high-lying parts (rigging and hinged deck).
