In 1936, the design team of the KhAI (Kharkov Aviation Institute), led by IG Neman, proceeded to design a light reconnaissance bomber with weapons, designated KhAI-5. In the design of the new aircraft, advanced ideas, tested at KhAI-1 and KhAI-6, were widely used: perfect for its time wing mechanization, including a number of complex mechanisms for controlling flaps, ailerons and shutters, retractable landing gear, wooden gasoline tanks, original turrets and a photo-installation .

The new aircraft took part in the summer battles of 1939 on Khalkhin-Gol, made reconnaissance flights. In the initial period of the Great Patriotic War, the out-of-date R-10s were flying to reconnoitre and assault enemy positions near Moscow and Leningrad. The plane received the front name "super-long-term". Individual specimens were in service until 1943.

The model is of medium complexity, there is the furniture of the cockpit of the pilot, the lack of verbal instruction is more than compensated by very detailed assembly drawings.
