The Gloster project, designated SS.37, was a major upgrade of the recently adopted Gauntlet. The aircraft was to be fitted with a more powerful version of the Mercury engine, and its aerodynamics were to be significantly improved. In early 1936, the Gloster Gladiator entered production. It was the first enclosed cockpit fighter of the Royal Air Force. Deliveries to the Royal Air Force began in February 1937. A total of 747 aircraft were produced.
