The Soviet fighter M. M. Polikarpov was the result of the refinement of its predecessor, the I-5. The first flight of the biplane took place in October 1933, and soon it, along with the I-16, became the main fighter aircraft of the Soviet Air Force. The I-15 aircraft was very light and had high maneuverability, but its low speed and weak armament did not allow it to fight on an equal footing with enemy aircraft in the late 1930s - early 1940s.
