The project of the new German battleship, which for the first time was intended for combat operations not only in the coastal zone or in the closed water area of the Baltic Sea, but also in the open ocean, was developed under the supervision of Rauchfuss, the chief ship engineer of the German Navy. Its design was more successful in comparison with the previous series of battleships of the type ‘Sachsen’: during the design it was set a limit of displacement of 10 thousand tonnes. It was built in Stettin (Szczecin). Launched on September 21, 1891. After coming into service in 1894, ‘Brandenburg’ was classified as a battleship of the 1st class and became a part of the 1st Division of the 1st Squadron. In 1895 it made a campaign to Spain. In 1914 it was introduced into the Navy and was involved in coastal defence, and at the end of 1915 it was withdrawn to the reserve. In 1919 it was removed from the Navy list. In 1920 it was scrapped for metal.
