Named after the famous German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, she was a cruiser in name only, but was in fact a slightly modified copy of a battleship, lacking the important factor of speed. Therefore, some experts considered her a 2nd class battleship, like HMS Renown.
The ship was intended for use abroad, in particular to support German colonies in Asia and the Pacific. With the beginning of World War I, it was a coastal defense ship in the Baltic. From 1915, it was a training ship for the Kiel School of Mechanics, and in 1919, it was a headquarters ship. It was scrapped in 1920.
