Development of high-speed fighter and-3 was carried out under the direction of NN Polikarpov in 1926. After considering a number of options for I-3 chose German BMW motor-VI. I-3 was a biplane odnostoechny mostly wooden structure. The aircraft has a very clean aerodynamic shape. Due to the relatively heavy weight of the motor I-3 was significantly higher than that of other domestic fighters in those years.
