10 km east of Jericho, in the Jordan Valley, near the place of the confluence of the Jordan into the Dead Sea, according to the New Testament, received the Baptism from John the Baptist Jesus Christ (John 1: 28-34, Matthew 3, 13-17). Now the Place of the Baptism of Jesus Christ, due to the change in the riverbed during the last 2 thousand years, is at a distance from the present bank of the Jordan River.

Not far from it, on the modern bank of the Jordan River from the Jordanian side is the functioning Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist, whose golden domes are visible from afar. The Orthodox Greek church was built over the ancient chapel of the monastery, built into the new building as a crypt. In it you can see the remains of ancient frescoes and mosaics.

The temple with two bell towers attracts many pilgrims who bathe in the sacred waters of the Jordan.

The oldest part of the church is in the apse, separated from the hall by an iconostasis, decorated with 44 icons. Although the size of the Temple is small, it is very beautiful outside and inside.
