Self-propelled barge T-36 is a representative of Soviet landing boats, built on the basis of American LCM pontoons, designed for delivery and disembarkation of troops on unequipped coast. They were built in large series in 1950-1960. The T-36 became famous thanks to the legendary drift - an incident that happened in January-March 1960, during which four servicemen of the USSR armed forces spent 49 days in the Pacific Ocean, having only the remnants of a three-day supply of food on board.
On January 17, 1960, during a violent storm, a barge carrying four soldiers was torn from its moorings off the coast of Iturup Island. After unsuccessful attempts to stay in the bay of the island and the use of fuel reserves on the night of January 17-18, it began to be carried by the wind and current into the open ocean. During the drift period, the barge moved more than 1700 km. On March 7, she was discovered and her crew rescued by the American aircraft carrier Kearsarge. The incident was widely reported by the American and Soviet media.
