The ‘Savannah’ was the first steam frigate. In addition to the full frigate sailing weaponry, the three-masted ‘Savannah’ had a piston steam engine of 90 horsepower and rowing wheels or a propeller as a propulsion system. Under steam, the ‘Savannah’ was capable of running up to 4 knots in the calm weather. In 1819 ‘Savannah’ with 32 passengers on board crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the route Savannah - Liverpool in 25 days, for those times it was a very good result, which became a world sensation. However, the steam engine on the ‘Savannah’ during this voyage worked only 85 hours because of the extremely limited supply of coal on board. The rest of the time the ship was only sailing.
