The staff of the design bureau headed by SA Lavochkin, in December 1941 completed the modification of the standard being built fighter LaGG-W under radial engine AL-82. Alterations were relatively small, the size and design of the aircraft survived, but because of the larger mid-section of the new engine to the fuselage sides lengthen second, broken, trim. This was done in order to avoid under-stop mass production of the aircraft. In the future, the fuselage was redesigned. The modified aircraft, received the stamp of La-5, adopted for mass-production. Already in September 1942 Fighter Regiment, equipped with machines La-5, participated in the battle of Stalingrad and achieved major successes. The fighting showed that new Soviet fighter has significant advantages over the enemy aircraft of the same class. Its speed - 613 km / h - with good maneuverability was higher than the rate of the best fighters of the enemy. Armament La-5 consisted of two synchronous guns ShVAK. Engine air cooling is a kind of pilot protection from fire from the front hemisphere. Using this property, the pilots who flew in the La-5 and boldly went to the frontal attack, forcing the enemy to its own advantage battle tactics. In 1943 it was released 5047 fighter La-5. In this issue of the magazine presented "toothy" La-5, which was repainted specially for the delivery of Captain Georgi Kostylev as a gift from fellow soldiers.
