USS Chillicothe, a river battleship, was built in Cincinnati, Ohio, commissioned on September 5, 1862, in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
On January 8, 1863, after leaving Cairo, Illinois, and until the end of the war, Chillicothe constantly worked on the Mississippi River and its tributaries.
Participated in the fighting on the White River in Arkansas in January 1863, in the assault on Fort Hindman on January 9-11, 1863, and in the expedition on the Yazoo River from February 20 to April 10. In this expedition the ship was badly damaged and was sent for repairs in Mound City, Illinois. Was returned to operation on September 6, 1863. In the winter-spring of 1864, Chillicothe participated in military operations on the Red River (Red River). On April 3, the commander of the ship, Lieutenant JP P. Coutouy (Joseph P.Couthouy), was mortally wounded with small arms. June 8, 1864 participated in the capture of the battery of the Confederation in Simsport (Simmesport), Louisiana.
Chillicothe returned to Cairo on July 13, 1865, and on November 29, 1865, was auctioned at Mound City.
