One of the first orthodox defensive temples - Saint Sophia Cathedral in Polotsk also applies for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This monumental monument of architecture of XI-XVIII centuries, was built by Byzantine architects for the construction of five seasons between 1044-1066 years under Prince Vseslav (Sorcerer) on the right bank of the Western Dvina. Feature of the Polotsk St. Sophia Cathedral are faceted apse, characteristic for wooden churches. Neither in Kiev, nor in Novgorod such apses do not meet. The grandiose cathedral served as the main public building of the city, where the reception of ambassadors took place, declared war and peace. Cathedral was the main object of tourist interest in Polotsk, the center of cultural life. Numerous tourists are attracted not only to the concert hall with organ, but also a unique museum of the history of temple architecture.
