The tug boat of the project 1606 "Kostromich" was created on the initiative of the design bureau "Glavlesprom" of the USSR in the late forties of the last century. The initial purpose of the ships was as follows: work on timber floating, towing non-self-propelled barges and ships, pontoons, transportation of goods weighing up to one and a half tons, groups of passengers (mainly timber rafting workers). However, after the launch of the boats "Kostromich", they were actively used for service in the navy and border guard services. In civilian shipping, they were used as tugs and crew boats. Over the entire production period of such a model, more than 500 units were built.
