A type of flat-bottomed vessel with a shallow draft. Historically used to transport agricultural cargo or livestock on shallow canals and rivers in Europe. In the 18th century, 2- or 3-masted ships of this type, capable of carrying 10-50 guns, were also used as warships, especially in the shallow coastal waters of the Baltic Sea during the Great Northern War. In 1803, at the Camp of Boulogne, French forces planned to use them as landing ships for the invasion of England.
