The ship's project was developed and implemented in Livorno (Italy) by order of the Soviet government. Laid down on September 9, 1935, launched on December 28, 1937, entered service on October 22, 1939. At the beginning of World War II, he took an active part in hostilities in the Black Sea - he provided a convoy of supply vessels and fire support for troops, landed troops and delivered ammunition, took the wounded and civilians from the besieged Sevastopol. In June 1942 he broke through from Novorossiysk to Sevastopol, where he took on board over 2,100 people, as well as the surviving parts of the canvas of F.A. Roubaud "Defense of Sevastopol 1854-1855." 336 bombs were dropped on the overloaded ship, and the ship received very severe damage. On July 2, 1942, the Tashkent received 2 direct hits and sank near the pier in Novorossiysk.
