The Shasta, Yosemite and San Mateo ferries were laid at the Bethlehem Steel Company for the Six Minute Ferry Company in 1922. The South Pacific Railroad bought ferries and put them to work through the San Francisco Bay, where they walked until 1939. In 1947, San Mateo began work on the route Seattle-Suquamish-Illahee. In 1948, he served the Kingston-Edmonds line for three months, then was transferred to the reserve. In the 1950s he worked on the routes Fauntleroy-Vashon-Harper, Bremerton route, Kingston-Edmonds, Edmonds-Seattle-Winslow. San Mateo made his last run from Edmonds to Kingston on Labor Day in 1969.
