Designed in mid-1932 by the design bureau under the leadership of A.O. Firsov, who was working in Kharkov at that time. The basis for the tank was the BT-5, which had a riveted-welded structure of the hull and armor plates. For the tank, towing hooks were welded to the stiffening wing consoles, and a new flap with a locking lock was designed to protect the driver from bullets, shrapnel and lead splashes. To save money on production, welding was replaced with riveting.
