The Short Brosthers flying boat S.1 is built entirely of metal (excluding wing sheathing), mainly of duralumin. This in itself made the car unusual, since for that time this material was not used to any significant extent in the construction of aircraft.

Its use in the manufacture of the hull of a flying boat was another innovation in the history of British aviation: in the machine of the company Short, this metal was used to make the frame and for lining it. Thus, the car in question became the world's first light seaplane built in this country and, probably, in the world. And not only that: on this aircraft adopted twin-engine layout, characteristic of large machines. The plane is a monoplane - another innovation, at least for that time.
