The first vehicle, indexed SU-D25, was developed on the instructions of the Self-Propelled Artillery Directorate, the second, SU-D15, at the initiative of Uralmashzavod. In both installations, in comparison with the serial SU-85, the mass increased slightly, but the armor penetration increased by 30% and 28%, respectively. After considering these projects, the NKTP admitted that guns of calibers 122 and 152 mm could overload a medium self-propelled gun and worsen its maneuverability, so the production of Uralmash prototypes was not allowed.
