The original ArmaLite AR-15 rifle is a scaled-down version of Eugene Stoner's ArmaLite AR-10 rifle. Colt created its rifle after the ArmaLite division of the Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation sold the patent and trademark to Colt's Manufacturing Company in 1959. After Colt's patents on the Colt AR-15 expired in 1977, many gun manufacturers began to produce their copies of the Colt AR-15 rifle under various names. Although the patents expired, Colt retained the AR-15 trademark and is the only gun manufacturer that has the right to call its weapons AR-15. The letters "AR" in the name Colt AR-15 are short for "ArmaLite Rifle", not "assault rifle".
