One of three turbojet-powered aircraft ordered on January 1, 1945 for evaluation tests by the United States Navy (the rest were McDonnell FD Phantom and Vought F6U Pirate), and the first of three North American NA-134 prototype aircraft (designated FJ -1) made its first flight on November 27, 1946. It was powered by a General Electric J35-GE-2 engine with a thrust of 1733 kg (3820 lb). One hundred production FJ-1 aircraft were ordered on May 28, 1945, but their number was subsequently reduced to 30. Each aircraft was armed with six 12.7 mm (0.5 in) machine guns on either side of the air intake and had a J35-A- engine. 2 thrust 1814 kg (4000 lb). Serial deliveries began in March 1948. The first landings on the aircraft carrier "Boxer" were made on March 10, 1948.
