Samples studied can vary in quality and colour.RFC and RAF linen was usually "calendered" (i.e the weave was flattened by heated rollers at the mill) but the Germans had faith in the theory that natural fabric had better adhesion qualities for the application of dope and varnish, requiring less and, therefore, saving weight.Top quality linen supplies were soon exhausted and the German aviation industry had to use whatever it could get, even examples of linen destined for table-ware is recorded as having been used.This sheet represents a warmer, varnished tone.
