RLM 21 White Color Guide:
In 1938 RLM 21 Weiß was introduced in accordance with Directive L.Dv. 521.
RLM 21 White was widely applied for painting tactical markings, emblems, prop spinners, etc. on Luftwaffe aircraft.
In the winter of 1941 and 1942, the white RLM 21 Weiß distemper was used to apply winter camouflage to better blend in with the snowy terrain.
In 1941-1943, Luftwaffe aircraft in Africa, like other Axis aircraft of the same period, carried white RLM 21 Weiß markings on the propeller spinner, fuselage stripes, and wingtips.
RLM 21 White was used as an identification color for 1, 4, 7, and 10 Squadrons of the fighter and 1, 4, 7, 10, and 13 bomber Luftwaffe aircraft Groups respectively.
RLM 21 Weiß was also widely used for painting 'Reichsverteidigung' (Reich Defence) identification tail bands introduced in 1944. The tail bands, consisting of two equal-width strips of white RLM 21 and red RLM 23, were painted on JG 52 aircraft, black RLM 22 for JG 26 "Schlageter", and green RLM 25 for JG 77 on "Herz As" aircraft. There were also 3-stripe tail bands with the white RLM 21 placed in the center, such bands with RLM 23 Rot identified aircraft belonged to JG 6 "Horst Wessel", with RLM 25 Grün to JG 51 "Mölders", blue RLM 24 to JG 300, yellow RLM 27 to JG 2 "Richthofen", and RLM 22 Schwarz to the JG 4 squadron respectively. The fighter-bomber squadrons wore checkerboard tail stripes, thus, RLM 21 White and RLM 21 Light Green checkers were painted on KG(J) 27 "Boelcke," and RLM 21 Weiß and RLM 24 Dunkelblau were painted on KG(J) 54 "Totenkopf" respectively.
