Although titanium as an element was discovered in 1791 by William Gregor, it was not used outside the laboratory until 1932, when William Justin Kroll obtained it by reducing titanium tetrachloride with calcium.
Titanium is used in steel as an alloying element (ferrotitanium) to reduce grain size and as a deoxidizer, and in stainless steel production to reduce carbon content.
Titanium mill products find wide applications in industrial, aerospace, recreational, and emerging markets.
Because titanium alloys have a high tensile strength-to-density ratio, high corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, high crack resistance, and the ability to withstand moderately high temperatures without creeping, they are used in aircraft, armor plating, naval ships, spacecraft, and missiles.
